Newspaper stories

I was totally disgusted by a newspaper article today. The police boarded a train and demanded a 100 rupee bribe ($2) from a couple travelling b/c they had a bicycle on the train. The couple didn't have the money so they offered 5 rupees that they had. The police got mad and threw the lady (who was pregnant and holding a 3 year old) off the moving train. The 3 year old was thrown far enough from the train that she lived, but the pregnant lady went under the train and died. It just makes me sick how the people that are supposed to be the protectors of the public (the police) are actually ones that cause a lot of trouble here. Just pitiful. I guess the public heard and stormed the trains to get the 2 cops. They were rescued by their senior officials and formally arrested.

The paper also said that the monsoon will be here by Monday. This has been “the city’s longest wait for the monsoon in well over a decade,” over 10 days late. Gotta say I don’t mind at all that the rain hasn’t made it here yet.
